Cultivating Persistence: Habits Over Motivation
Michelle Dhanoa | MAR 14, 2025

In our fast-paced world, we often look to motivation as the driving force to achieve our goals. Whether it's starting a new yoga practice, committing to mindfulness, or simply showing up for ourselves every day, motivation feels like the spark that lights the fire. But here's the truth: motivation is fleeting. It's like the morning dew—beautiful and fresh, but it evaporates as the day unfolds.
If we rely solely on motivation, we may find ourselves struggling to stay consistent. That's where the power of habits comes in.
As a yoga instructor, mindfulness coach, sound bath facilitator, and pranayama breathwork guide serving the Maryland, D.C., and Virginia areas, I’ve witnessed how small, intentional habits can create lasting transformations. Habits are the foundation on which persistence is built. Unlike motivation, they don’t waver with the ups and downs of life.
Our habits shape who we are and who we become. When we prioritize creating mindful routines—whether through yoga, breathwork, or self-care—we build resilience. We learn to persist not because we feel motivated, but because our habits carry us forward.
Pick one habit to focus on and break it down into a small, manageable action. For example, instead of aiming to meditate for 30 minutes daily, start with 2-3 minutes.
Define exactly what your habit looks like. For instance, instead of saying, “I want to exercise more,” say, “I’ll walk for 15 minutes after dinner.”
Use an activity you already do as a trigger for your new habit. For example, after brushing your teeth, you might do a few minutes of breathwork or a quick stretch.
Place reminders in your environment. A yoga mat in the living room or a journal on your bedside table can encourage you to follow through.
Keep a habit tracker or mark your calendar whenever you complete the habit. Watching your streak grow can motivate you to keep going.
Aim to show up daily, even if the action is small. Missing a day is okay; just make sure to restart the next day.
Combine your habit with something you enjoy. For example, play soothing music during your meditation or use a favorite essential oil during breathwork.
Share your habit goals with a friend or join a community with similar interests. Knowing someone else is cheering you on can help you stay committed.
Celebrate your progress with small, meaningful rewards. For example, treat yourself to a relaxing bath or a new wellness accessory after a week of consistency.
Reflect on your habits regularly. If something isn’t working, tweak it to fit your lifestyle better. Flexibility is key to sustainability.
By following these steps, you can gradually integrate positive habits into your life that feel natural and fulfilling. Which habit are you thinking of forming or improving?
Motivation may light the way, but habits pave the path. Let’s walk it together.
Are you ready to cultivate habits that elevate your mind, body, and spirit? Let’s work together to create a practice that sustains your growth and well-being.
