Seeking the Eternal: My Reflections on Bhagavad Gita Chapter 15

As someone who grew up in a Catholic household, my early years were shaped by rituals, traditions, and a clear set of beliefs. Yet, as I entered high school, I began to feel a disconnect between what I was taught and what resonated with my inner self. Over time, my path shifted from religious to spiritual, as I searched for a way of living and understanding the world that felt authentic to me.
Recently, I found myself drawn to Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text that explores the nature of reality and the journey of the soul. This chapter, known as “The Yoga of the Supreme Divine Personality,” uses the metaphor of a cosmic tree to illustrate the difference between the material and spiritual realms. Its message about seeking the eternal and letting go of the transient struck a deep chord within me.
What I love about this chapter is its invitation to look beyond the surface of life. The Gita encourages us to recognize that our true self is not limited to our physical body or even our thoughts, but is something much deeper and more enduring. This perspective feels liberating, especially compared to the more structured and sometimes rigid aspects of my Catholic upbringing.
There are, of course, differences between what I learned growing up and what the Gita teaches. Concepts like reincarnation and the cyclical nature of existence are not part of Catholic doctrine. But instead of seeing these differences as obstacles, I view them as opportunities to expand my understanding of spirituality. The Gita reminds me that wisdom can be found in many places, and that my spiritual journey is uniquely my own.
Ultimately, Chapter 15 inspires me to keep seeking the eternal within myself and to remain open to insights from diverse traditions. My study of the Bhagavad Gita has reinforced my belief that spirituality is about personal growth, self-awareness, and a deep connection to something greater than the material world. It’s a journey that continues to unfold, one insight at a time.
