Somatic Grounding Tool: Hand-to-Heart Hold
Michelle Dhanoa | MAR 16
A simple, body‑based practice to bring warmth, steadiness, and connection back into your system.
This somatic tool uses gentle touch to signal safety to the nervous system. It’s especially supportive during overwhelm, emotional intensity, or moments when you feel disconnected from your body.
One or both hands
Comfortable seated or reclined posture
1–2 minutes of quiet
Sit or lie comfortably and soften your shoulders.
Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.
Take three slow breaths, feeling the warmth of your hands.
Stay for 1–2 minutes, noticing any shift in breath, warmth, or grounding.
Place both hands on your belly if heart contact feels too vulnerable.
Add a gentle hum on the exhale for vagal support.
Keep eyes open if closing them feels activating.
If inward focus feels overwhelming, keep your attention on the warmth of your hands rather than your breath.
During anxiety or emotional overwhelm
Before or after difficult conversations
Before sleep
When you feel disconnected or “floaty”
