Somatic Grounding Tool: Palm Press for Nervous System Steadiness
Michelle Dhanoa | MAR 28
A simple, stabilizing somatic tool that uses gentle pressure to bring your system back into balance.
This grounding technique uses steady, gentle pressure between your palms to signal safety to the nervous system. It’s especially supportive during overwhelm, anxiety, or moments when you feel unsteady or overstimulated.
Both hands
Comfortable seated or standing posture
30–60 seconds of quiet
Sit or stand comfortably and take one slow breath.
Press your palms together gently—just enough to feel contact.
Hold the pressure for 5–10 seconds as you breathe slowly.
Release, pause, and repeat 3–5 times.
Press one palm into your thigh instead of both palms together.
Add a slow exhale through the nose for extra grounding.
Pair with a simple phrase like “steady” or “I’m here.”
If pressure feels activating, reduce the intensity or switch to a lighter touch.
During anxiety or overwhelm
Before meetings or conversations
After transitions or travel
When you feel scattered or ungrounded
