Somatic Grounding Tool: Shoulder Softening Sweep
Michelle Dhanoa | MAR 24
A gentle, touch‑based somatic tool to release upper‑body tension and bring your system back into ease.
This simple sweeping motion helps down‑regulate the nervous system by releasing shoulder tension and inviting warmth and softness into the upper body. It’s especially supportive during overwhelm, stress, or long workdays.
One or both hands
Comfortable seated or standing posture
30–60 seconds of quiet
Sit or stand comfortably and take one slow breath.
Place one hand on the opposite shoulder.
Sweep your hand down your arm slowly, from shoulder to fingertips.
Repeat 3–5 times on each side, matching the sweep with a slow exhale.
Add a gentle hum on the exhale for vagal support.
Keep movements micro‑small if touch feels activating.
Pair with a grounding phrase like “soften” or “steady.”
If touch feels overwhelming, imagine the sweeping motion instead and keep attention on your breath.
During anxiety or overwhelm
After long periods of work
Before or after difficult conversations
When your shoulders feel tense or braced
